Dark Denim Chair/Ottoman

I am not going to lie…my client dropped her chair off at my work studio with her dark denim fabric and I had my doubts. I had not been to her house, so I didn’t see the full concept of what direction she was going with the room. In my head I was thinking, Hmmm…denim… that was pretty awesome 15 yrs ago. Then I sent her a sneak peak of the finished chair and she texted me a pic of the room it was going in, then I got excited and offered to drop it off at her house so I could get pics because IT WAS GOING TO LOOK AMAZING!!! Jute rug and all!

During the drop off she told me that she was on the tail end of this room makeover! WELL—enough said~ I LOVE ROOM MAKEOVERS!!! She did such a great job! Then she emailed me pics of the befores—so here it is for you all to enjoy! I always love a great BEFORE and AFTER!

Family room–BEFORE! Lots of fun colors and a bit country–which she was tired of. She was done with the red.

Chair—BEFORE—worn and faded!

Chair–AFTER! Dark Denim in all it’s glory paired with a great jute rug from Pottery Barn.

Family Room—AFTER! Such a nice update! Clean lined, sophisticated, and calming!

Side Note–

Kids are back in school and I can think again. It was great having them home and we did lots of fun stuff…but my business was just in survival mode. Trying to keep up and not get behind. Now I am revisiting my ideas I had at the end of Spring. Here are my initial thoughts, comment if you are interested and if there’s enough interest, I’ll start getting dates arranged.

-Job Shadowing–for all of you that have started a slipcover business of your own, but want a little more direction and mentoring. This would take place at my work studio. $200/day. 1 student. Tailored to your needs (onsite fittings, wing backs, cutting, quickbooks, photography skills, waterfall skirts, scheduling appts, blogging, cushions, ordering down cushions, etc.). You can decide how many days you want/need. 6 hour day.

-Workshop–2 day workshop at my studio for beginners. 4-5 students. $200/student. Bring a chair, fabric, and sewing machine. You will leave with a completed chair and a new skill. Hands on learning. 6 hour days.

-Skype Mentoring–$50/hr–sewing questions for your business or for your own projects.

Ikat Chair

My client got this great tan/cream Ikat. I decided to do a waterfall skirt since we were tight on fabric and the fabric had a pretty large repeat. I forgot to get a before pic…Basically it was a muslin covered chair that was intended to have a slipcover.

AFTER–The morning light wasn’t kind to my photos! Anyhow you get the idea! I added some extra down fill to the back pillows. They were flat and hard poly fill. I LOVE down pillows, they make your furniture look better.

Blind hem and matching of course! After 12 years of making slipcovers, I finally came up with a painless way of matching that doesn’t require you to keep putting the slipcover on and off to match repeats. I included these instructions in my “Get it Covered”–Advanced Slipcover Guide. It’s like Magic, I promise! I actually look forward to matching large repeats now.

SIDE NOTE–

BEFORE—Front room

AFTER–Front Room—We were so EXCITED with the way this room turned out. The owner was in awe–“It looks like a model home, I couldn’t be happier”. We used their furniture (couch and chairs) and brought in a coffee table, little bookshelf, end table, pillows, lamps, and nick backs from our stash. IT’s all about using what you have and giving it some WOW factor.

BEDROOM–BEFORE— The bedroom was dark and dated. We wanted to freshen it up a bit and make it more modern.

AFTER–We found a king white coverlet in their linen closet, brought up their rug from downstairs, pulled the chair in from the loft, hung a mirror we found in the hallway, and replaced their curtains with a fresh set of white and a set of grey curtains to fill in the bay window. We tried to make it work with the chocolate brown wall, but in the end we had the homeowner paint it–MUCH BETTER!

We brought lamps, pillows and accessories from our stash to finish it off. Now that’s a MASTER BEDROOM!!!

Henrie Family Room Makeover

The Henrie’s live next to my sister, and her name happens to be Camille (not to be confused with my Camille), so I will call her Camille H. She emailed me some photos of her space and through text and email over the next few weeks, she did most of the work–Painted, picked up items off KSL (craigslist), planked her pantry door, stained her coffee table, planked another wall, hung the light fixtures, etc.

In the meantime I slipcovered her chair and ottoman and made some pillows. Then my Camille and I headed up to install and accessorize the small stuff. This is more of my Camille’s specialty than mine. I do the furniture and fabric stuff…so we compliment each other well. We always joke that we are each other’s other halves—

Her Before wasn’t bad… it was just a bit dark and needed some small updates. We decided to get rid of the tan walls and do white paint with a slight grey tint.

We wanted to clean it up and get rid of all the “stuff”, faux painting, and crackle paint, and vinyl.

We also wanted to rearrange a bit and move the TV and play with the furniture placement. Also the rug had seen it’s day!

AFTER!! Camille H. has always loved white slipcovers, so we slipcovered her chair white and ditched her second chair that wouldn’t work well with a slipcover and replaced it with a $25 Thrift Store Rattan chair that had hunter green cushions. I recovered the cushions with the same white linen. We picked up 2 glass lamps at a yardsale for $10, and Camille H. found the coffee table off KSL for $40 and stained it a bit darker.
We decided the TV would look better on the wall next to the fireplace instead of above it. That way we’d have a nice focal wall to make pretty—since she didn’t have much wall space with all her windows and tall chair rail. So we need to have a spot to hang some stuff.

I found the AMAZING kitchen light fixture off KSL for $120–well worth the splurge! The pillow in the chair was from Target–which I put a zipper in and took out the polyfiber filling and inserted a down form. Down pillows look so much better over time than a polyfiber fill. Then we chose our other pillow fabrics from www.fabric.com.

Camille H. originally had a bench in her small entry way that took up too much space. I found this great piece on the local Vintage Facebook yardsale Page. It was $60, and the measurements were PERFECT! Only 10″ deep…so we went for it. Plus is was another opportunity to create visual interest with accessories. We reused some stuff from around the house and a few small trinkets (glass and wire basket) that I picked up for $1-$2 at the Thrift Store.

We love using old books and mixing old with new.

How beautiful is the back of this chair!!! I hovered nearby while another lady was looking at this chair at the thriftstore–she was taking pics and called someone about it. As soon as she walked away to debate the purchase, I moved in…

Camille H. found a few great empty large frames at a garage sale for $5-$10 each. We were able to use the large one above the mantel with a wreath she had made awhile ago. We also got the Jute rug from www.rugsusa.com for $170 (8×10).

This wire basket was also a garage sale find for $5! I wanted to steal it!

Camille H.’s couch was picked up used a few years ago and it was looking worn. She got some shoe polish and spruced it up! Such a great idea!!

Camille H. also decided to plank her pantry door with 1/4″ plywood that she ripped in the table saw in 4″ strips. She thought it would be easier to plank than to strip and sand the crackle door—I agreed! Turned out AMAZING! Somehow I didn’t get an after shot of it with the faux painting covered up.
